Welcome to the Adblog: Append to Goa Update 2

By popular demand (read Still's asking and Che's taunting), I'm including a taste of the ads that were shown by Mr. Sanjay Khare at our post-lunch session.

He showed us more campaigns than I can bring out here, so I'll highlight the most prominent one. The Economist.

Their print ads were powerfully visual, and ridiculously simple in their message.

This is possibly their most famous ad, beginning a trend that they carried long and far.

The red and white became a symbol of the Economist, a theme they used very successfully. And the copy continued to be cheeky, as you can see.

Here are some examples in other media.

The campaign was so successful, other companies started to ride piggy-back on it; I think this one image tells the story rather well (click on it and see it in full resolution, it's worth it) .

The red rectangle went on to become so well known, that the Economist entered a new phase in their advertising. The name was no longer needed to know who the ad was for, as you can see here.

Finally, after a very long time, they've decided it's time to move on, so they've started an entirely new campaign. I'm not going into that, but I will link it. If you want, go check it out.

Still, I hope you're happy. And that you've learnt your lesson.

Someday Jhayu you're gonna make a girl eternally happy. Why? coz you listen dear, you listen :)

I know that it's entirely Preeti's domain but I just wanna say I love u for what you did :D

Loved the visuals - perfect example how creative advertising (it's all in the copy here, absolutely brilliant - you almost gave Che a high hand by calling it cheeky...lol!) makes a product into a brand.

I'm not all that impressed with their new campaign - well, they sure were in need of a revamp but they ain't taking a chance - notice how they still keep the red rectangle in the layout.

My favourite campaign ever - the Marlboro Man - have you guys seen it? Btw, it's an ad on anti-smoking.

I'm happy and I've learned. Which lesson, this I'm not quite sure abt? :)

@ Still.
Why someday? I could start doing it today!
And please, feel free to love me! I'm sure it won't do any harm... =P
And yeah, I didn't much like the new ads either. And no, I haven't seen the Marlboro man campaign, but now that it's been recommended, I'll be right off to see it.

And the lesson, my dear, can be formulated as a question. Should I make a new post for the Absolut ad campaign? It'll be longer, I can assure you.

Sparkling said...

I've seen that campaign. Infact, I have a screen saver of all it's executions :) But put it up if u want, I'm sure everyone will love reading the post.

Btw, I've even worked on an execution (just for thrills) to promote tourism in Brazil. Now, let me see if you can guess it :p
(Think hard, think SATC)

And my CD did something especially for the Middle East - I thought it was awesome. Simple and awesone.
Clue here: Think censorship.

@ the world in general.
It's 1.00 am. I'm sleepy. My eyelids droop. And she gives me puzzles to solve!

Morning, morning, please!

...And he can't think so he makes an excuse and goes off to sleep...

@jhayu...

three hours...and in the end?

Preeti said...

@still...

thank god i've got someone else in the 'i love jhayu' domain...

"Someday Jhayu you're gonna make a girl eternally happy. Why? coz you listen dear, you listen :)"

I TOTALLY AGREE...

:-)

Then who talked about Globus?
Me htinks it was him only.
Ill ask Bunny Singh to confirm.

jhayu said...

@ Che.
It was him, it just wasn't rebranding, it was just changing the logo.

@ Preeti.
Haw! You were afraid to go it alone?

@ Still.
You smart.. I not. = (

Amazing stuff!
Absolut ad campaign. Did you mean the 'absolut world' campaign..(I felt it wasn't that great)

Preeti said...

yaaa.. what else did you think...?

the fear factor is very high inside me...

Yash said...

You saw the cube one? and the one which read "copy has to be eight words..."

I love their campaign!

jhayu said...

@ Chusks.
If you're talking about their new campaign, I haven't seen all their ads.

@ Copy rioter.
I meant the one where they did weird stuff with the bottle. Then went on to have a whole 'find the bottle' thing. Me likey that.

@ Preeti.
Haw! Thou dost fear the very knight that be thy salvation many a moon?

Yash said...

Neah... belongs to the red & white bunch.

b/w neilfrench's website is also interesting.

Sparkling said...

By calling me that, you've just proved that you're intelligent as well :p

jhayu said...

@ Chusks.
Naw, I haven't seen that.

@ Still.
Anything to weasel my way out of answering. =P

Very cool advertising. I wonder how I have never seen any one of them before.

Preeti said...

salvation...

sigh!!!

:-)

jhayu said...

@ bubbly.
Yeah, I saw it for the first time when our CD showed it to me a week or so before we left for Goa. But seeing the whole campaign was something else...

@ Preeti.
= )

Mudra said...

@Jhayu: No! I'm serious. They're great ads. Mind-blowing, to use the reality-show term.

jhayu said...

@ Muduu.
Then what's with the bold and the monosyllabic comment then???

Mudra said...

@Jhayu: *Monosyllabic* because only 1 word occured to me. Bold because I thought it was REALLY interesting. Sheesh. Why does everyone think I'm being sarcastic all the time?

PS - "Interesting" is more than 1 syllable btw. =)

PPS - I like your message for your commenters. :)

jhayu said...

@ Muduu.
It might have something to do with the fact that you're sarcastic a lot of the time.

And yeah, you got what I meant.

And Thankis!
