IPL Thoughts

A lot of people are already aware of this, so please, bear with me while I inform the rest.

Here is my original policy for supporting IPL teams in any given match:

Always support the team that comes from further south, except when:
a) KKR is playing, in which case, support them, or
b) Mumbai Indians are playing, in which case, automatically support the other team.

My reason for disliking MI is fairly simple. I don't like how the team is named. I mean, the opening batsman and bowler are from Sri Lanka and South Africa respectively... Why call the team Mumbai Indians?

As far as supporting KKR goes, I just liked their black-n-gold colour combo. Oh, and that wicked awesome flaming ancient Roman war-helmet logo.

Which brings me to the next topic: How To Choose Which Team To Support:

a) By Performance:
The IPL does this for us, Rajasthan Royals coming out on top, with Deccan Chargers and Bangalore Royal Challengers bringing up the rear.

b) By Team Colours:
KKR takes this one hands down. Really. No contest. Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab fight for the next spot. Bringing up the rear, Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings.

c) By Team Logo:
KKR wins. 'nuf said.

d) By Cheerleaders:
Rajashtan Royals take the crown. Wow. No, I mean WOW. Bangalore Royal Challengers come in second (Go Mallya!), with KXIP coming in third. Bottom of the table: Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Seriously, people, get a clue. Male cheerleaders? With the two remaining females in trackpants? For CSK, that too yellow? Not happening.

Oh, and I now support a toss-up of CSK, DD and KXIP. No specific reason as such.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with male cheer leaders except it would be nice if they were doing something (anything) more than simply standing around and showing off their non-existent muscles while shaking ur pom-poms... thats not really macho

Firstly, women neither go to, nor see IPL matches for cheerleaders. Secondly, and far more importantly, they are NOT, let me say again, NOT shaking MY pom-poms.

up until now men didnt go to see cricket matches for cheerleaders coz there werent any. but now that they are there, its an added attraction... i wish ppl thought the same way for women and brought on some more male cheerleaders of a better calibre. It will even increase their fan-following

jhayu said...

Whose fan following? The cheerleaders'?
See. Men went to watch the matches. Women who went, went either because
a) they were fans of the sport themselves, or
b) they wanted to go with their husbands/boyfriends/girlfriends/parents.
c) they wanted the stadium experience
In case a), they're probably lesbians anyway, and therefore want to see women. In case b), they're under watch, and so can't see cheerleaders. In case c), they're too excited about the noise and their complete inability to make out anything from their seats to care about anything else.
Ergo, cheerleaders are for the men. Ergo, they should be women. Hot women.

there couldnt be a better example of women being stereotyped... i mean what the hell do u mean by saying that those women who love the sport are lesbians... and hello its not like women under-watch have their eyes plucked out u know and if they really wanted to enoy everything about the game they wouldnt go to the game with their husbands or boyfrnds alone so in all the noise nobody would care who is looking at who... this discussion is becoming pointless... theres only one thing i have to say... i hate sitting and watching 40 overs and listening to silly commentry and if there were male cheerleaders it would definitly be a reason why i would stop fighting with my dad every night to change the channel

jhayu said...

Fine, even if I grant you all that, the concept itself grates on my skin.
Male cheerleaders? Not working for me.

jhayu said...

Oh, and what's with the feminism lecture?

Menaka said...

you look at the women.. why deprive the women of something to look at

jhayu said...

And one other thing. Learn how to spell 'commentary'. Alternatively, get a spell check for Firefox. I use one, there's no shame in it.

jhayu said...

Consider the proportion! You're pitching for like 1/10th of the audience. I'm batting for the rest...

jhayu said...

Besides, the women get their fill of eye candy on the field with the players. Men need some, too.

Menaka said...

im talking about improving that ratio... but my opinions are falling on a biased mind and one that really can make much difference anyway... so id rather ends this argument here

Menaka said...

in that case there should be a lot more audience for women's cricket...

jhayu said...

So you want to bring more women to come see cricket matches, except that they don't watch the cricket, but the men. Hmmm... Wow.

And before you begin, as I know you eventually will, the men were going to see the matches anyway, they're just getting an added incentive.

jhayu said...

Yes, there should. It's just not promoted enough. We should talk to the BCCI about it...

oh man, u too have found a new place to fight, great going!

I think MI takes it for the dress code! The blue suits the best!

And for the team names... the logic stands for the rest.

The MI team uniform is crappy!

Talk, my friend. Now that you've read this section, the urge to speak has increased. I know. It's all right. It happens...
Stop fighting it. Talk.
